New SAMCO Eco Green Labware Range Introduced At Achema 2024 With A Focus On Material Sustainability

As a British-based primary manufacturer of laboratory glassware and plastic packaging, S Murray & Co is always looking for new ways to reduce the environmental impact of our production processes and the materials we use. We were delighted with the response to our new SAMCO Eco Green Plasticware range, introduced at Achema 2024. SAMCO Eco Green Plasticware is made from a blend of Prevented Ocean Plastic™ and I’m green™ bio-based sugar cane-derived polythene, to help address not only the sustainability of plastic material production – exchanging a fossil fuel-based approach with an oxygen producing process – but also tackling end of life issues through the use of post-consumer recycled plastic.

Over recent years, S Murray & Co has already taken a number of steps to reduce our carbon footprint. Lighting has been replaced with low energy LED lightning throughout our production and warehouse units, with sensors introduced to minimise energy consumption when not required. Led by consultation with the production teams, working and shift patterns have changed to minimise energy consumption throughout production and at machine start up times especially. We have also redesigned the packaging of our glass test tube and specimen tube ranges to utilise less cardboard, introducing increased FSC certified content, and reducing the energy used in our box assembly processes as a result.

The new SAMCO Eco Green Plasticware range takes these sorts of initiatives one step further, looking at the environmental impact of the material used in the manufacture of the products themselves, beyond just the production processes behind them.

Introducing bio-based content for the LDPE material used in this range helps create a positive carbon impact at the start of life. Through the absorption of carbon dioxide and the emission of oxygen, the natural processes from which the ethanol used to make the material is derived offer a carbon positive impact compared to traditional fossil fuel-based production methods, with each metric tonne of I’m green™ PE produced capturing 3.09mt of CO² eq.

Using HDPE Prevented Ocean Plastic™ (POP) recycled content aims to prevent plastic from entering the oceans by collecting it before it reaches the water. S Murray & Co is proud to work with partners who actively promote the local economies in which they operate, introducing collection facilities where they are not currently well established, and helping address some of the end of life concerns surrounding the use of plastic packaging.
